Dear Dr Thomson and Roddy It's with great sadness I've heard of the sudden passing of Dr Fleming. I remember you both with fondness. My son and Colin were roughly same ages and often compared the boys. So soruy for your loss Irene (Anderson)

Thoughts on a very human doctor

I first met Gibson as med students over 60 years ago as a tall, lanky student - who would later become a much respected [and yes - dedicated] family doctor. To me his personality was a contrast of the celebratory with a really sensitive, quiet thoughtfullness. It was a blend I really came to like. He loved nothing more than regaling a large company of friends - typically in some hostelry - yet equally he loved the outdoors and nature particularly birdwatching. I remember with great nostalgia the fun we had as live-in obstetric students; at times a little wild [I managed to prang his famous `Wembley mobile`- in which he drove the group to see Scotland defeat England post World Cup]. At his most convivial, he could churn out these memorable epigrams - the best of which were recorded in our Final Year Book. Life then became a bit more serious - but again Gibson would make his mark. I heard from multiple sources - both other doctors and patients/relatives - how good and caring a GP he was. He settled down to family life and married Sheila - someone unusual in her honesty and integrity and brought up his two boys. In his retirement I hope he found some solace in the beautiful Highland scenery around Lochcarron. I think of that lovely Jewish saying `May his memory be a blessing`. Gibson you`ve left many such memories!

Farewell to a fond running friend

I first met Gibson when I moved to Glasgow and joined the Westerlands running club. He must have been mid-60s at the time, and still an intensely competitive runner. He had a running style that was only top runners are able to attain - efficient and beautifully elegant. Full of enthralling stories, Gibson would "hold court" at social events, invariably attracting a crowd of enchanted onlookers. In 2014 had the privilege to accompany Gibson and Sheila on a trek to Nepal, where we spent three weeks walking around the mountain Manaslu and over a remote 5000m pass. It was hugely memorable trip, made all the more so by their wonderful company. I doubt many 70 year olds would have managed, but the two of them did so without difficulty (with the possible exception of a "senior moment" when someone managed to forget they had packed their ice spikes in their day pack, resulting in a rather more hazardous descent down the Larke La pass than necessary!). Their relocation to Lochcarron inevitably meant I saw rather less of Gibson and Shelia than I would have liked, but my occasional visits there were a real treat. I have fond memories of the local highland games turning into a mud bath, with cars being hauled out of the field by a tractor and the shot put disappearing underground when it landed. The consensus opinion seemed to be that at least the rain kept the midges away! You brought so much light and joy into the world, Gibson. You will be sorely missed.

A couple of walks…

I didn’t know Gibson well but a couple of walks and talks with him left their mark. I really enjoyed his company and the generosity of his insights into walks across Europe as we rambled around some part of southern England. I’m just so sorry for your loss Sheila and Roddy, nothing and no one can fill the voids but I hope you can, in time, focus on the wonderful times you had together and find comfort and support in each other and your friends and family. Sincere condolences, Clare (David and Jackie Savage’s daughter)
