Old Friend

So sorry to hear of John’s passing, especially when he was still so young. I served with John at RAF St. Mawgan back in the ‘70s. John and I were young airmen and close friends back then, we worked hard and played hard as only the young can do. We shared a house in Newlyn East, worked and played together and lived in each other’s pockets all that time. As happened on a regular basis in the forces back then, when someone got posted people lost touch. This is back in the days before mobile phones, before laptops, and before the Internet was even a dream. John and I managed to stay in touch up until the mid ‘80s when I demobbed. Our last meeting was around May ’85 when John picked me up and drove us both down to Padstow for a Nimrod groundcrew reunion. As soon as I saw his photograph on this memorial page I recognised his infectious grin straight away. He hadn’t changed a bit, even after all these years. John was fantastic to work with, and was held in such high esteem by his friends and workmates that a number them flew back from Germany to Cornwall just to help John celebrate his 21st birthday party. That was an event I will never forget! John was full of energy; he had a great character and always had a mischievous twinkle in his eye. No matter what the military, the weather or life in general threw at us, John faced it head-on and always with that smile on his face. John was a great friend and I am saddened that now I am retired and started looking for old comrades, that he of all people should no longer be with us. I will raise a dram to his departure. Rest peacefully old friend. Until we meet again. Bob.
