I knew when I was a lot older that Alistair McCook as well as being a wonderful photographer that he was also a very patient one. This is because my mother often told me when I was older, while looking through old black and white photographs of me and my siblings, Jean, Shirley, Gordon and Ruth. Alistair would come to the Garlyne to take outside photos of us as toddlers. Seemingly I wouldn’t stay still and consequently there a number of photos of me in my best clothes but looking a bit disheveled. My mother often remarked that “ he had the patience of a saint.” When I was about 11 he knew I was a keen birdwatcher. He asked me to let him know if I found a mistle thrush nest as he wanted to photograph the young getting fed. He would give me half a crown if I did. I duly found one up the back of the house. I excitedly led him to it to find that the young had gone! We always thought it was the cat that got them. I can still remember my feeling of disappointment and that I had let him down. I always remember his understanding attitude and response. Plus he gave me half a crown. In later life I found out that he was one of the founding members of the Cairngorm Mountain Rescue team and greatly enjoyed his stories when in his company.
