LINDA CHAMBERS

04 June 2021
I was so sad to hear about the passing of George. He was someone very special to me. In the 1970’s , when I was a young spring lamb, he interviewed me for a job and employed me in the PE dept at Gordonstoun, which set me on my way to a career in teaching Physical Education. He and Bette were so kind to me and my future husband who I met in Hopeman. On the 11th May 1979, he gladly stepped in for my father and gave me away at my wedding to Peter in Elgin. After we moved down to Lincolnshire, we always kept in touch and we visited them at Hopeman in 1985, along with our 5 year old son. Every Christmas we would exchange cards and news and it was always lovely to hear how things were going at school and in his retirement. We moved to France in 2012 and despite the distance, we still had the odd phone call, cards and news at Christmas. George was one of life’s true gentlemen, a total legend and I learnt so much from him. Always calm, knowledgeable and nothing ever phased him. He knew that Pete and I were fervent rugby supporters and to this day, I will always remember his famous line he once said to us when he knew we were off to Murrayfield for the, then, five nations. He said, “Did you know I have played many, many times on the pitch at Murrayfield........ in the band!!” What an absolutely wonderful person; Hopeman was blessed with his presence for so many years. My sincere condolences to Garry and all your family. Rest in peace George and play your pipes from heaven! 🥰🥰
