Ian was an utterly lovely man. Generous of heart and mind, devoted to family and friends, a pillar of the Church (born and brought up as a Scots presbyterian, but later in England, while working for years as a language tutor for the Foreign Office and the Diplomatic Corps in London, of the United Reformed Church in Highgate, I came to know him and his lady Joyce, there not on deeply personal terms, but always amiable and friendly.
His linguistic talent and range were formidable. He would sometimes have passages of time where his tutorial services were not required, so he would, as he put it 'go off to learn another language'. He may not (he would be the first to admit) completely mastered Latin or classical Greek, but his German, and later Hungarian and several other tongues were at his fingertips.
Despite these remarkable intellectual accomplishments, he was ever a man of quiet sense, emotional intelligence and wisdom. It pains me that although I have known him for the best part of thirty years, news of his demise has only just now reached me. Joyce, dear lady, if you are reading this, know that my thoughts and prayers will be with you always.
