Dear Mum, You were one of a kind. Everyone who knew you, knew that. I know that you were proud of me, but I am all that I am, because of you. Did I ever tell you that I was honoured and proud to be your daughter? Because I was. Nobody else's mum was fluent in Indonesian, English, French and German. Nobody's else's mum cooked as well as, or as internationally as you did. Food was always present. Nobody else packed school lunches like yours. While the other kids were eating sandwiches, you had packed a 3 course meal for me including rice. Nobody's else's mum would pick them up at 2.30am when there were no taxis. But then again, nobody else's mum would call them in the pub or when they were out to ask them to pick up milk on the way home (and there were no mobile phones back then, you would call the landline of the establishment). Nobody else's mum seemed to do the multitude of (at times) excruciatingly embarrassing things you did because you simply did not care what other people thought, and which I now look back on and admire and laugh at. I remember when you were in Australia and I was in Glasgow and I had been ill, you telephoned Lynne telling her to come round and look after me. I have no idea how you got her telephone number but she came. I remember being surprised when she turned up and asked how she knew I was ill to which she dryly replied, "your mum called me." Mum, you were the lioness who protected me and always made me feel safe. You were fearless, fearsome and funny. You could make us laugh till we cried. You were as sharp as a tac and had this amazing ability to make the simplest of processes complicated but there was always logic behind the madness. You were kind, smart and hugely generous. Dad misses you. You and dad were such a team. Your story was a true love story, soul mates to the end. Not many couples had what you had. Welove you and miss you, mum.
