Memories from a while ago,

So sad to find that Howie as I knew him at Gray’s School of Art had died in 2018. I didn’t know him as a close friend - but noticed how enthusiastic he was in his work, as he was being part of the art school band. I bought a ceramic pot from him as a gift to a friend, loved the style in this he used often being full of light straightforward yet powerful, I would love to have read a biography of his life, having just caught a glimpse of such a rare person. I didn’t finish the course sadly due to various problems, but still appreciate true art.

I saw the sad news of Howard’s death only this month, March 2019, in the Robert Gordon’s College magazine, the Pelican. I haven’t seen Howie since I graduated from Scott Sutherland’s in 1974. I now live on Salt Spring Island, BC, Canada. Howie and I shared the same apartment in London for part of a summer in the late 60’s, with Howker Watson, Lindsey Reid, Stuart and John Lawrence, Heather McCracken? and Carl Maine. Howie was a larger than life figure even back then, handsome, indomitable, headstrong, adventurous, humorous, restless, a natural raconteur. I remember him with warmth and affection and can only imagine how his energy, vitality and unique persona will be so badly missed. My sympathy for those who bear his loss.
