Most people have a few special friends who seem to naturally make a difference. Although I was never able to be around Mel anything like as much as I would have liked, each visit left a lasting memory.
I made an effort to include him in my many fortunate aviation adventures. I knew he would always get a kick out of hearing about yet another unique plane that I got to fly, or visit to a new intriguing airfield or museum around the world. He also stepped up like no other when I had a not so fortunate aviation experience. His immediate concern, support and kindness helped me through one of my toughest times.
My best experience concerning Mel was certainly when I accepted an award at Oshkosh on his behalf for his outstanding work with the Young Eagles program. It was my opportunity to express my admiration for Mel in the company of many who would understand. I was never more proud of a friend.
Mel was generous to a fault and his wit could crack me up in an instant. He loved following our family's many adventures and fortunately for me, got to meet all three of our kids. They each have fond memories.
As for my wife Ann, she immediately warmed to Mel, appreciating his wit, sharing a passion for the north of Scotland and his interest in camper vans. She continues to use Mel and Kate as ammunition in her eternal quest to get me to buy a VW Camper Van. Mel may have been special, but even special friends have their limitations.
I will not be able to say goodbye to my unique friend in person, but I will raise a glass of the finest Highland nectar when I get home. I will salute one of those rare individuals who always remained precisely that.
Forever admired and never forgotten.
